More than a safe choice for tata sons
Natarajan Chandrasekaran is well qualified to take over as leader of the Tata group. Ratan Tata and his four collaborators on the search committee that was appointed to find a successor to Cyrus Mistry deserve to be commended for doing a good job. Chandra, as the man who ran TCS, the cash cow of the Tata group, is called, is not a major shareholder or any relative of a major shareholder. He is not just not a Tata, he is not even a Parsi. His elevation signals a turning point in the corporate culture of not just India’s largest business group but of the nation itself. The Indian professional manager has arrived. Chandra’s is a safe choice for the Tatas to make at the current juncture. He has proven talent, is a long-time Tata insider and a thorough professional at his prime. Given the controversy surrounding the leadership of the Tata group, it would not have gone down well at all, if the search committee had dug deep into the family woodwork and come out with a nondescript Tata or even a member of Ratan Tata’s inner circle. But Chandra is more than a safe choice. He is a right choice, if not the right choice. He is young, at 53. Having taken over as Tata Sons chairman at 51, Ratan Tata is well aware of the benefit of having someone at the top who is likely to have a long innings. His earlier pick, Mistry, was just 48.
He understands the sweeping change in business conduct being wrought by technological developments such as big data, artificial intelligence, robotics and new materials. If he just replicates in the Tata group of companies the diverse kind of transformative projects clients have contracted TCS perform, the group would emerge stronger. As a major shareholder, Mistry should wind up his battle for control and cooperate with the Tata management, so as to focus on the group’s, and his own, financial returns.
