Government has only itself to blame for angering a Supreme Court bench which was cut up that its verdict directing operational telecom players to pay adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues of nearly Rs 92,000 crore was flouted. SC also berated a telecom department (DoT) desk officer for issuing a notification waiving payment of AGR dues until further orders. A stung DoT then went the other extreme ordering telcos to pay up by Friday midnight. Airtel has promised to deposit a tranche of Rs 10,000 crore by February 20 while deep in the red Vodafone Idea has made it clear it needs relief on the payment schedule.
