She was charged with sedition. Rescue came from across the border, thanks to comrade in ink Amrita Pritam. The Indian poet appealed to then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to get asylum for the Pakistani poet, Fahmida Riaz. Since then our neighbour’s intolerance has hardly abated, instead India’s has surged. Today the kind of shelter once offered to Riaz would be overwhelmingly trashed by populist politicians and fellow travellers.
