For this, the court must be strong from within, so as to be strong vis-à-vis external pressures. The unprecedented charge of sexual harassment against the current incumbent of the office of the chief justice is an attack on the institution: the organised manner in which the charge has been conveyed to fellow judges and the coordinated release of the information to the media reveal planning and execution beyond the remit of an individual complainant. The court must be protected against attempts to sway it in any direction. At the same time, it is vital to demonstrate the internal solidity of the court. That must be achieved by expeditious conduct of the due process that the court itself has laid down for such contingencies.
