Pending that, the Supreme Court should hold all police officers and lower courts to be in contempt when they invoke sedition in the absence of an explicit exhortation to immediate violence. Over a dozen people, mostly young, have been booked across India for allegedly ‘anti-national’ comments made on social media platforms. Students have been charged in Uttar Pradesh, Bengaluru, Bihar — and four women of Kashmiri origin, studying medicine in Rajasthan, have been booked for ‘sedition’. Mobs accuse people whose speech they do not like of being anti-national. The police obligingly slap the charge of sedition against them. This democracy.
