Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a pointed message by refusing to meet Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, while conveying to Chinese President Xi Jinping – China happens to be Pakistan’s chief patron – that Modi’s attempts to pursue better relations with Pakistan had been derailed, and that Pakistan must create an atmosphere free of terrorism before such attempts can be renewed. Xi, of course, took Imran’s side by suggesting resumption of formal talks between India and Pakistan. But New Delhi has been bitten down this path many times before, and rightly stuck to its position that Pakistan needs to choose between talks and terror – it can’t have the cake and eat it too.
