General Musharraf is likely to die of his ailments or plain old age rather than by the hangman’s noose or at the unfamiliar end, for a former army chief, of a firing squad. Nevertheless, the fact that a special court of Pakistan handed down the death sentence to a former general who also served as the country’s ruler for the crime of high treason is a watershed in Pakistan’s history. But it would be premature to read in this development some strange and unreasonable, given the fragility of institutions in the country, maturing of democracy. The development marks, more likely, the effort of the judiciary to stamp its authority over State and society, thus marking unhealthy jostling among the system’s power centres.
