Pragya Singh Thakur’s nomination as a candidate of the ruling BJP in the Bhopal Lok Sabha constituency has been a channel for yet more of what would have earlier been considered the extreme right fringe to join the mainstream, and shift the mainstream itself rightward. This proposition was validated by Thakur herself when she hailed Mohandas Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse as a patriot. Yes, there are some who have built a temple to Godse and worship him for, in their eyes, selfsacrifice for the sake of ridding the nation of the appeaser-inchief of the enemy. But such people are obvious outliers. After her nomination as a BJP candidate for the Lok Sabha, Thakur joined the political mainstream.
