The editorial
Source: The Economic Times · 22 Apr 2020Q. An intellect fuming with anger comes to experience delusion. How can we get over anger?
A. Dear Mr Ramachandran, I am happy to hear from an 80-year-old who is thinking about such issues because, as you know, anger is a destructive emotion. To be without anger is desirable; it is part of the quality of Ahimsa, which means doing nothing destructive and everything in the name of peace and harmony. Unfortunately, angry people are often eager to see their anger as caused by others. They feel justified in having righteous anger. There is always a ‘them’ who is hurting ‘us’, and so the cycle of anger, revenge, resentment and fresh reasons to be angry keep up, generation after generation. The answer is to go where anger doesn’t exist — go to the silent mind. Anger cannot be eliminated from society. Anger is part of the setup we accept and live by at the ego level.
