Source: The Economic Times · 7 Jul 2018The proposed Higher Education Commission is little more than the University Grants Commission (UGC) minus grants and stuffed with bureaucrats. It falls far short of the unified regulator that India needs to prepare the nation for a greater role in the knowledge economy. What is required is a body that will set minimum standards and ensure compliance by all institutions across the higher education spectrum, plan for the sector’s future requirement to be responsive to the needs of the country. In short, the Higher Education Commission must be both a regulator and a philosopher and guide for the sector, staffed by academic representatives from the technical, medical, legal and other professional streams, besides from the natural and social sciences and art and literature.
