India did well to join leading democracies in diplomatically boycotting the Beijing Winter Olympics. And China made the decision easy – by making a PLA regiment commander involved in the 2020 Galwan clashes a torchbearer in the Olympic relay. China, therefore, politicised the Games even though it has been levelling that charge against other nations. Before India, the US and UK, Canada, Australia, Estonia, Lithuania, Belgium, Kosovo and Denmark had all announced diplomatic boycotts of the Games citing China’s human rights violations.
