Source: The Economic Times · 10 Sep 2019As the end of September approaches, the mood in financial markets is fretful. Around ₹35,000 crore worth of redemptions or rollovers of bonds issued by non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) are due. Will there be takers for all those IOUs? Shadow banks provide liquidity to construction, transport, projects and financial markets. They cannot accept deposits, and rely on borrowed funds. Till recently, this seemed to work, but after the implosion of IL&FS, one of the largest shadow banks, and DHFL, a home-finance company, most NBFCs look risky. Their borrowers too, are shaky: real estate companies, whose dependence on NBFC finance rose from around 35% in 2011-12 to 60% last year, are in deep trouble, as are vehicle companies. There are exceptions like HDFC, State-owned life insurer LIC and NBFCs of large conglomerates. But lesser shadow banks are in trouble.
