The economic and healthcare costs of crop residue burning are beginning to be quantified and the news is not good. An International Food Policy Research Institute study has estimated that Haryana, Punjab and Delhi can gain 14 million life years by eliminating crop residue burning. The study also found that 5.4% of Haryana residents showed symptoms of acute respiratory infection symptoms during the stubble burning period in contrast to just 0.1% in two south Indian states that were used for comparison. Children under five were particularly at risk, the study found.
