Source: The Economic Times · 6 Jul 2020The ministry of oil proposes to free gas prices but shackle gas transportation to provide a ‘level playing field for consumers’. This is confused thinking. Free gas pricing will provide undistorted incentives and disincentives for production and consumption, ending discriminating for or against any particular industry or location. Non-discrimination is the best form of levelling. But the ministry’s ‘level playing field for consumers’ of gas means creating a very unlevel playing field for producers and investors. Right now, distant consumers pay higher prices. Oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan wants all consumers to pay the same price, and calls that rationalisation. In fact, it is highly irrational.
