Among many commentaries on Indian armed forces’ theatrisation plan is the one from the new navy chief, Admiral R Hari Kumar. He said the US military took 50 years to achieve its joint command structure. Although Kumar clarified that he wasn’t implying that it would take a similar amount of time to establish India’s joint theatre commands, his thrust was to highlight the complexities involved. Presently, India has 17 single service commands spread across a wide geography. However, the changing nature of security threats and warfare means that a great degree of jointness is warranted among the services. This in turn would require a whole new military culture and thinking where the services transform themselves from individual warfighting units to training their personnel to operate under joint command.
