The Sebi consultation paper on business responsibility and sustainability reporting is welcome. Businesses are, of course, accountable to their shareholders. But, increasingly, consumers, employees and investors also seek sustainability, social responsibility and good governance in corporate performance.

ESG — short for environmental, social and governance — is quite the rage among large investors. That means that companies must disclose their governance processes, social practices and environmental impacts. That is what Sebi wants.
