Eight killed, several hurt in Bihar temple stampede

At least eight people, mostly women devotees, were killed and several others injured in a stampede at the Sheetla Mata Temple in Nalanda district of Bihar on Tuesday.

The government has ordered a probe into the incident, which occurred in outgoing Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s home district. Police officers at the Deep Nagar station have been suspended.

‘Short on security’

Some local residents claimed that security at the temple was short-handed as most of the district’s police personnel had been deployed for President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to a university just a few kilometres away.

Others blamed the temple management for taking bribes to allowing devotees to bypass the queue.

Mr. Kumar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Murmu expressed grief over the incident.

The incident took place as a large number of devotees, mostly women, had gathered to offer prayer at the temple in Maghra village, near Biharsharief town, on Tuesday morning, including many from the neighbouring districts of Patna and Nawada.

“Due to the heavy rush of devotees at the temple to offer prayer, a stampede happened in which eight lives were lost, some due to suffocation and some due to loss of water, Nalanda Superintendent of Police Bharat Soni said.

Police personnel from neighbouring districts were called in to control the situation.
