Source: The Economic Times · 18 Jun 2019One country, two systems was rubric under which China undertook to take Hong Kong back from Britain, after its 99-year lease over the so-called New Territories expired in 1997. The Communist government of China has tended to see this distinction between one and two as a fluid bit of the myriad ephemera that stand between China and its destiny to be the centre of the world. Beijing has imposed its will on Hong Kong and its Legislative Council (LegCo) in assorted ways. A law that would allow Hong Kong to extradite people to mainland China was part of this pattern. Except that it has produced a backlash that has grown into the most emphatic demand for democracy to be heard in any part of China after the Tiananmen Square incidents 30 years ago.
