In yet another move that reeks of tokenism, the Gujarat government recently issued a directive to its schools to ensure that students respond with ‘Jai Hind’ or ‘Jai Bharat’ during roll call. The directive, which applies to government, grant-in-aid and self-financed schools, aims to foster patriotism among students. This is problematic at several levels. First, patriotism can’t simply be foisted on children. It comes from within when people take pride in institutions of the nation. Moreover, children learn what adults practise. If adults act towards the improvement of society and country, that in itself will foster patriotism in children.
