The editorial
Source: The Economic Times · 19 Apr 2020When asked where she got her strength from, Mother Teresa slowly took out her rosary beads and said, ‘from here’. World over, one common thread that connects across religions is the practice of chanting the names of god — be it the 99 names of Allah recommended in Islam, the seven names of god mentioned in Judaism or the 1,000 names of Vishnu in Sanatana Dharma, for example. The more number of people that chant, the more effective the practice becomes. This could be why on March 31, the Supreme Court of India asked the Centre to rope in leaders of various faiths to conduct ‘bhajan-kirtan’ and ‘namaz’ to help check panic during the coronavirus outbreak.
Why should one take up chanting and how does it work? Theoretically speaking, the Law of Karma mandates that karmic reaction will ensue to reclaim equilibrium. Then why do we need god? When and how does god intervene?
