There are multiple reasons why the stock market is not a good indicator of how the economy performs. Many companies with potentially lucrative futures are not listed. Many sectors, such as finance, are over-represented in market indices, even as sectors such as construction are under-represented, in relation to their share in the economy. Weighting also plays a role. But more than the structural problems of the index, the heavy dependence of the market on foreign fund flows creates distortions.
