BJP’s attack on opposition parties for being family-run entities and even painting the fuel excise duty cuts as relief for the ordinary citizen amid global fuel price rise were deft attempts to convey pro-incumbency sentiment. The swiftness with which the fuel excise duty cuts were announced by Centre and nine states ruled by BJP on the same evening as the bypoll results had clearly caught the opposition unawares. They are now on the defensive having to explain the higher prices for fuel in opposition ruled states.
