Sugarcane economy’s biggest enemy is politics, bailout package needs to address it.

Sugarcane politics comes at a cost. Shortly after BJP lost a crucial bypoll in Uttar Pradesh’s Kairana, home to beleaguered sugarcane farmers, a new bailout package of about Rs 8,000 crore is proposed to be unveiled. It reflects political clout as sugarcane is grown on just 2.6% of India’s total area and accounts for 5.08% of output. However, the sugarcane ecosystem is in need of urgent reform and a bailout package should not be a mere palliative ahead of a general election.
