The government’s readiness to foot the bill of something like Rs 7,000 crore to compensate banks for waiving the interest on interest accrued during the moratorium on servicing loans of up to Rs 2 crore is welcome relief. However, that will still leave a large number of larger companies stranded, and in need of relief. The government needs to work out how to provide that relief. The suggestion we have made is to inject equity in companies, with which the companies can service their loans and carry on business, fulfilling the orders generated by economic recovery on the back of a big spending push by the government.
