He may not have banged the traditional taiko drum this time around, but PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Japan — his third as PM — was significant in its achievements. The India-Japan vision statement encapsulates a close partnership and lays down the framework for an alternative for global alliance and development. The personal bond between Modi and Japanese PM Shinzo Abe — who described his Indian counterpart as one of his “most dependable friends” — is reflected in the deepening bilateral relationship evident across sectors. The $75-billion bilateral currency-swap agreement, a 50% hike over the 2013 arrangement, will bring down the cost of capital for Indian entities accessing foreign capital. This reflects mutual trust. The decision to deepen bilateral security and defence cooperation, and to institute a Foreign and Defence Ministerial (2+2) Dialogue, is an important development, as is the commencement of negotiations on the Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement.
