Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and state chief ministers sit down today to discuss further strategies against the Covid-19 pandemic, relations — already frayed over GoI’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) — between the Centre and the states remain exacerbated. Innovative consultation and coordination mechanisms for a joint Centrestate effort to battle one of the worst medical crises ever would have helped to restore trust.

However, in the months since the first case of Covid-19 was reported in Kerala on January 29, there’s little to indicate that post-Covid politics will be any different from pre-Covid times. The tussle has possibly sharpened between the BJP’s push for a unitary structure at the Centre and the demand from regional parties for greater autonomy to the states to strengthen the spirit of federalism envisaged in the Constitution.
