But Nawaz Sharif, on his return after the military coup that ousted him and especially after the court defenestrated him, had begun to challenge the army’s sway. To his undoing. The army has won the 2018 Pakistan elections. For the Pakistani army generals, the outcome is the best they could hope for. Their preferred candidate, the cricket star-turned-politician Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreeke-Insaf is in the lead but with 113 seats, short of the requisite 137 seat-majority. If Khan leads a civilian government, it would depend on the army for survival.
