In US’ 231-year history, Trump is only the third president to be impeached. He is charged with gross abuse of power and office — seeking the interference of a foreign government in the 2020 presidential elections by asking the Ukrainian government to investigate Hunter Biden, son of former vice-president and 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden, and asking his staff to refuse to offer testimony during the impeachment hearings. The vote was predictably on partisan lines — with all Democrats, barring three from Trump-friendly districts, favouring impeachment. The Senate, where Republicans have a majority and defections on the scale required for a two-thirds majority that alone can pass a guilty verdict is virtually ruled out.
