First, it was the dollar, the common currency of international commerce. After President Donald Trump slapped secondary sanctions on those who deal with Iran, threatening to cut off any bank or entity that has even an indirect link to a prohibited Iranian transaction from New York’s dollar networks, the world came alive to the need for a non-dollar alternative for settling payments in transactions that do not involve an American counterparty. Now, following prohibition of trade with China’s telecom giant Huawei without the permission of the American government on national security grounds, Google has decided to stop supporting Huawei phones with its Android operating system, and Google apps, including its Play Store. Android is American property, not some chunk of the global commons, as the world had come to believe.
