Source: The Times of India · 15 Mar 2021Foreign minister S Jaishankar’s strong defence of the government in the face of western human rights and democracy institutes downgrading India in democracy rankings is understandable. After all, as a minister it is his job to defend the government. Plus, his remark that many of these institutes are guilty of hypocrisy may also be valid in certain contexts. But there’s no escaping the fact that concerns about erosion of freedoms and the state’s authoritarian turn have steadily increased in the last few years. In fact, these concerns have been articulated by Indian citizens and organisations themselves. And this is a perception that government needs to address.
