Source: The Economic Times · 4 May 2019The Muslim Education Society has banned the face veil for girl students on its campuses, which number 150, are located mostly in Kerala and where 15,000 staff members educate 85,000 students in everything ranging from medicine at the postgraduate level, engineering, management, the liberal arts, the sciences, pedagogy and industrial training to the CBSE syllabus. This is a welcome development. Predictably, a couple of conservative Muslim outfits have opposed the ban, in the name, interestingly enough, of the individual right of girl students to dress as they choose. Kerala’s political parties have not weighed in on the matter so far, but that is only a matter of time. We hope their contribution would be healthy.
