The editorial
Source: The Economic Times · 28 Jul 2018This newspaper is not in favour of the death penalty and would like to see being locked away for life instituted as the maximum punishment under the penal code. With that qualification, we wholeheartedly welcome the award of the maximum penalty to two policemen in Kerala for torturing to death a man in their custody. It is unfortunate that it has taken 13 years after the crime for the initial sentencing to occur. By the time final appeals are disposed of, the policemen who have been sentenced to hang and the three others who have been given jail terms, besides fines, for suppressing evidence, could well die of old age. That would seem to make the sentence, seemingly a first for the country for this crime, infructuous. However, it sets an important norm.
