10 body changes after 35 that are normal for women — and 5 that deserve a doctor’s visit
Turning 35 can bring subtle changes that many women may notice in their bodies, even when nothing is medically wrong. Shifts in energy, sleep, periods, skin, hair, muscle mass, metabolism, and reproductive health can become more noticeable with age, although the timing and intensity vary considerably from one woman to another. Some changes may simply reflect the gradual effects of ageing and changing hormones. Others, however, can overlap with symptoms of conditions that deserve medical attention. The challenge is knowing where the line lies between an expected change and something that should not be dismissed as ‘just getting older’.
For women in their mid-30s and beyond, understanding these differences can help them recognise changes without becoming unnecessarily worried about every new symptom. An expert can explain which body changes are generally expected after 35, which ones can vary from person to person, and what warning signs should prompt a consultation.
What changes can women normally expect after 35?
Dr Renu Raina Sehgal, Chairperson, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Artemis Hospitals, tells indianexpress.com, “After 35, you might notice some gradual changes.”
Here are the 10 normal body changes after 35, based on the expert’s comments:
• Less regular periods
• Decreased fertility
• Heavier or lighter menstrual bleeding
• Easier weight gain
• Slower muscle recovery
• Breast tenderness
• Drier skin
• Thinning hair
• Changes in sleep
• Occasional mood swings
“These changes are mainly due to the slow changes in the hormones in the ovaries, especially estrogen and progesterone. Also, metabolism, muscle mass, and lifestyle factors play a role in how obvious these changes are, but they are experienced differently by all women,” shares Dr Sehgal.
Which changes after 35 may signal a health problem?
Not all change after 35 is ageing. Heavy and long periods can be a sign of fibroids, thyroid problems and other gynecological conditions.
“Unexplained weight change, hair loss, severe acne, and irregular periods can sometimes be a reflection of thyroid disorders, anaemia, or hormonal imbalance. Don’t ignore new breast lumps, nipple discharge, bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, persistent pelvic pain, or significant mood changes,” notes Dr Sehgal.
