Two with suspected Nipah infection in West Bengal critical
The two patients who were suspected of being infected by Nipah virus in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal remained in a critical state on Tuesday. They are undergoing treatment at a private healthcare facility in Barasat city, the same hospital where both patients worked.Sources told The Hindu on Tuesday that one of the patients had tested positive for Nipah, and the report for the other patient was awaited. The two showed Nipah-like symptoms when their samples were tested at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences-Kalyani. The samples were then sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune for reconfirmation.
One of the patients has reportedly gone into a coma, while the other person remained in ventilator support on Tuesday. Reportedly, both patients were on duty in the hospital for the past few days. They had fever during these days after which they were admitted.
Both private and public hospitals in West Bengal are preparing for any adverse rise in the number of cases. The IDBGH (Infectious Diseases and Beleghata General Hospital) in Kolkata has prepared a unit for Nipah virus patients, officials said on Tuesday. An expert committee has been formed, helpline numbers have been launched, and a standard operating procedure (SOP) has been developed for all hospitals.
“Do not panic but stay alert. We have already started contact tracing and an SOP has been developed and deployed,” West Bengal Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty had said on Monday.
Contact tracing has begun across North 24 Parganas, Purba Bardhaman, and Nadia, because the two patients had returned from Bardhaman’s Katwa town recently.
