This is what could happen when you wear new clothes without washing them
Wearing brand-new clothes without washing them may seem harmless, but it can sometimes have serious consequences. Many people get excited to wear new clothes straight from the store. But it is always safer to wash them first, said Dr Manjusha Agarwal, senior consultant in internal medicine at Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai.New clothes often carry chemicals, dyes, or finishing agents used during manufacturing. “These can cause skin irritation, rashes, or allergies, especially for people with sensitive skin. So, avoid using them without washing them first. Clothes also pass through many hands during production, packing, and shopping, which means they may carry dust, dirt, or even germs. Washing removes these unwanted substances and makes the fabric softer and more comfortable to wear,” said Dr Agarwal.
Dr Rohit Sharma, a consultant in internal medicine at Apollo Spectra Hospital, Jaipur, noted that these substances can trigger severe allergic reactions, infections, or, in rare cases, life-threatening conditions such as sepsis, especially in sensitive individuals, such as babies and young children with very delicate skin.
“In the case of a baby, mild rashes quickly get escalated into blistering sores and systemic infection within 72 hours of life span. This rapid progression also highlights infants’ vulnerability to external irritants and pathogens. The immune system of babies is under the development stage, as even a small skin rash caused due to allergy or irritation can also allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream, leading to dangerous infections,” said Dr Sharma.
Clothes also pass through many hands during production, packing, and shopping, which means they may carry dust, dirt, or even germs. Washing removes these unwanted substances and makes the fabric softer and more comfortable to wear.
The simple practice of washing new clothes purchased from the store can reduce the risk by removing residual chemicals, dust, and microorganisms. “Parents should be very cautious when they are dressing their infants and should always ensure that all clothing, bedding, and fabric items are washed with gentle, baby-safe detergents. This small precaution can also save serious health complications and also safeguard the well-being of the child,” said Dr Sharma.
A quick wash also helps check whether the fabric colour runs and prevents stains on other clothes.
“In short, washing new clothes keeps you safe, clean, and comfortable while ensuring that your outfit feels truly fresh when you wear it. So, exercise caution and make sure to wash the new clothes thoroughly,” said Dr Agarwal.
