Strategic imperative us must waive caatsa sanctions for india’s purchase of s 400
US deputy secretary of state Wendy Sherman has said that her administration is hopeful of resolving disagreements with India over the latter’s purchase of the Russian S-400 system through talks. The US has been vocal in its opposition to the deal with the threat of CAATSA sanctions looming over New Delhi. But India has been clear that acquisition of the S-400 air defence system is critical for its defence needs. At a time when it is challenged by a formidable China-Pakistan axis, India simply can’t afford to slack in upgrading its defence platforms.Besides, Russia has long been a critical defence partner for India. Therefore, New Delhi can’t just forego defence ties with Moscow just because Washington has a problem. Plus, there is also a case for the US to review its application of CAATSA sanctions for military ties with Russia. For both the US and India today, China is the No.1 strategic challenge. And as things stand, Russia’s relationship with China has strengthened because of Western pressure on Moscow. It would be prudent therefore for the US to create space between Russia and China. And India can be the bridge to Russia to make this happen.
Taken together, the US must be cognisant of both India’s defence needs as well as the strategic imperative to pull Moscow away from Beijing’s orbit. Waiving off CAATSA sanctions for India’s purchase of the S-400 will be a good start.
