Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to make Congress his party’s main target. By giving the non-Congress oppositional parties less air-time in his speech in Parliament on Thursday, he has decided on the hierarchy of his government’s antagonists: first, Congress; then the rest of the bunch. Speaking powerfully — a lot — about Congress, he lay down the line before Lok Sabha polls in spring: everything that has gone wrong about India since its Independence, the Congress party is responsible for it. And that all rescue operations since then have been conducted by his five-year government. By implication, Modi stated that another five years of a government led by him would continue to set the country on the right track.

Such a pitch, with the oppositional forces finding some traction recently in key states, is, of course, not only understandable, but quite obvious. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi to give ballast to BJP’s ‘Congress-mukt Bharat’ project, the prime minister niftily reverse-engineered the ruling party’s anti-Congress aspirations with the Father of the Nation’s rather idealistic plan (read: hope) that the main party that won the country Independence should dismantle itself once India started to self-rule.

It was a litany. ‘The Congress doesn’t want a strong air force.’ ‘The Congress allowed looters to loot.’ ‘But, for the Congress, the Commonwealth Games were an opportunity to boost personal wealth of a few in the party.’ That is one strong pitch against the Grand Old Party. One would have honestly thought that the PM may be overestimating Congress’ prowess in the upcoming elections. But who knows, maybe BJP’s main man and brand ambassador may well be right about playing down non-Congress oppositional forces and playing up Congress threats to this government’s unfinished plans.
