Reopening schools is a policy decision with many dimensions where subjective and constitutional rulings by judiciary have no place. The bottom line is that children need to be back in schools as soon as possible. As soon as Covaxin trials on children return positive results and its production is scaled up, no time must be wasted in inoculating all ages of children.Supreme Court has rightly refused to entertain a school-goer’s petition seeking directions to central and state governments to enable students to attend physical classes. Governments are already in the process of phased reopening of schools. The unlocking may be slow but it is understandable given the tremendous shock that the second wave unleashed.A one-size fits all judicial order is untenable in the present situation. The pandemic isn’t proceeding uniformly everywhere. Kerala and the Northeast and a few districts in South Indian states have much higher test positivity rate. Only state and district administrations can make informed choices on what to do in this situation. Parents also have to be consulted. Those with fears over inadequate social distancing measures have to be reassured and schools must ensure better ventilation and surveillance for symptoms.
