Rajasthan cabinet expansion congress refurbishes house for 2023

In an event as closely coordinated by the Congress high command as the Punjab governmental redesign of September, the Rajasthan cabinet has been seriously expanded both to seek to reconcile the Pilot-Gehlot factions and to attempt a more effective social engineering model.

The new cabinet includes five Pilot loyalists, four Dalits and three tribals. By giving Punjab its first Dalit Sikh chief minister, Congress made a strong play for an intense battle underway to win over the Dalit vote in several parts of the country; and likewise in Rajasthan the induction of a new cabinet minister from the SC community combined with the elevation of three junior Dalit ministers to cabinet rank indicates party priorities for the 2023 assembly elections.

At the height of the public fallout between Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot and his former deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot in July last year, the Congress government had looked in danger of being toppled. Intermittent flare-ups between the two camps since then have been repeated reminders of the delay in giving Pilot his promised due.

Even if there are five ministers perceived to be from Pilot’s camp finally in the cabinet now, in the interim his personal authority has waned. But to form the government once again, Congress needs both Gehlot and Pilot delivering strong.
