Pm modi should be given ‘first opportunity’ to restore statehood instead of going to courts says omar
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said Thursday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had committed himself to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and that they have to be given the “first opportunity” to restore it instead of going back to the courts.The CM was speaking at his first press meet after he took over as chief minister in November.
“Every government or every individual has the recourse to courts but that was never going to be our first option,” he said at the media interaction, saying going to courts for restoration of statehood would be a “fight” and that “should never be the first option”. He was answering a question on whether the government should take recourse to courts.
Terming this his “biggest challenge”, Omar said: “J&K runs a deficit budget, therefore, we are more dependent on the Government of India than other states and UTs”. Addressing concerns of dual power centres in the J & K government, Omar said that neither the PM and the home minister nor anyone from the BJP or Raj Bhavan has put any pressure on the elected J&K government to “change our thinking or our language or our agenda.”
“From the first day, the PM and the HM have told me that you have been given the mandate and we are in the opposition, there will be no effort made to destabilise this government. The support that we had extended to the Lieutenant Governor, will be extended to you. We will respect the mandate of the people of J&K. These are the words of the PM and the HM,” he said.
