Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, 5 November, hosted the Women’s World Cup winners at his residence in New Delhi. Continuing his tradition of felicitating and listening to the stories of champion athletes, PM Modi welcomed Harmanpreet Kaur and the India women’s cricket team on Wednesday evening.

India, under Harmanpreet’s leadership, scripted history on Sunday, becoming the first Indian team to win the Women’s World Cup. Decades of heartbreak ended in Navi Mumbai when India defeated South Africa in a high-scoring contest by 52 runs.

Unlike the 2023 men’s World Cup final between India and Australia, PM Modi was not present at the venue during the women’s final. However, he joined millions of fans in celebrating the historic triumph, sharing a heartfelt message of appreciation for Harmanpreet and her team.

PM Modi has been a firm backer of sport over the years. From hosting Olympic champions to chess prodigies and Paralympic heroes, the Prime Minister has consistently taken time to meet and encourage India’s athletes.

The meeting at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg began at around 6 pm and went on for a couple of hours. The players, along with head coach Amol Mazumdar, flew from Mumbai on Tuesday evening and landed in Delhi.

The Indian women’s team and support staff received a grand welcome at the Taj Palace Hotel, where they were greeted with rose petals on arrival. The celebrations continued inside as Jemimah Rodrigues, Radha Yadav and Sneh Rana danced to dhol beats, cheered on by hotel staff and onlookers.

The squad travelled to Delhi on a special Star Air charter flight (S5-8328), with security tightened in the capital ahead of their arrival, according to PTI. Police personnel carried out detailed checks on the team bus and surrounding routes.

It remains to be seen whether there will be a victory parade for the team in the coming days.

India celebrated their triumph in Navi Mumbai with families and friends after the post-match presentation ceremony. Captain Harmanpreet, star batter Jemimah Rodrigues and Radha Yadav had their parents join the celebrations on the field. In a heartwarming moment, Harmanpreet was seen running into her father’s arms after taking the catch that sealed the World Cup for India.

The Indian players also honoured legends of the past, including Mithali Raj, Anjum Chopra and Jhulan Goswami, inviting them to lift the trophy and join the lap of honour at DY Patil Stadium.

Head coach Amol Mazumdar received a hero’s welcome on his return home on Monday before rejoining the squad for the trip to Delhi. Neighbours — mostly women — formed a guard of honour, raising bats to celebrate the former cricketer, who scored runs for fun in first-class cricket.
