1. The Reserve Bank of India recently released its report of Consumer Confidence Survey. According to the survey, consumer confidence has dropped to a record low. The current index dropped to 53.8 in July, 2020 from 63.7 in May. The survey was conducted through telephonic interviews in thirteen major cities.

2. On August 8, 2020, the former Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Jammu and Kashmir Girish Chandra Murmu took oath as Comptroller and Auditor General of India. He is the first tribal to take oath as CAG of India. The oath was administered by the President Ram Nath Kovind.

3. On August 9, 2020, PM Modi is to launch financing facility of Rs 1 lakh crore under Agriculture Infrastructure Fund via video conferencing. Along with the facility the Prime Minister will also release sixth installment of funds of Rs 17,000 crores. This is to benefit more than 8.5 crore farmers under PM-KISAN scheme.

4. n August 8, 2020, the island of Mauritius declared environmental emergency due to oil spill caused by Japanese owned ship that was stranded off the coast days ago. The MV Wakashio of Japanese companies Nagashiki Shipping Ltd and Okiyo Maritime Corporation was on its way from Brazil to Singapore carrying 4,000 tonnes of fuel. The ship ran aground on July 25, 2020.

5. The United Nations released 6 million USD in response to the explosion at Beirut port. With this, the total UN funding towards relief operation of the explosion has come to 15 million USD. A catastrophic blast occurred at the Lebanon capital, Beirut. It was driven by tonnes of Ammonium Nitrate.

6. On August 7, 2020, the Gujarat State Government launched the “Industrial Policy 2020”. The policy aims to provide Rs 40,000 subsidies to the industries in the state in the next five years.

7. Twitter has announced it would not amplify tweets by state-controlled media outlets and label the accounts of government-linked media, and key government officials from the five permanent member countries of the UN Security Council: China, France, Russia, the UK and the US.

8. President Donald Trump on August 6, 2020 signed an executive order that would ban Chinese apps TikTok and WeChat from operating in the US if they are not sold by their Chinese parent companies within in 45 days. While WeChat is owned by Tencent Holdings Ltd, TikTok is owned by ByteDance.

9. The ruling Sri Lanka People’s Freedom Alliance (SLPFA) won 145 out of 225 seats in the parliamentary election held in Sri Lanka on August 5, 2020. The Sri Lanka People’s Party (SLPP) of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his brother and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is the leading party in SLPFA.

10. Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) on August 7, 2020 said it has extended a USD 250-million (about Rs 1,870 crore) line of credit (LOC) to Mozambique for improving power supply quality in the country.
