Now open manage rd ppf accounts using aadhaar biometric at post offices

The Department of Posts has extended e-KYC functionality using biometrics of the depositor to include Recurring Deposit (RD) and Public Provident Fund (PPF) schemes. Earlier, this digital facility was available only for select savings schemes such as the Monthly Income Scheme (MIS), Time Deposit (TD), Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP), and National Savings Certificate (NSC).

Starting April 23, 2025, the Department of Posts has extended the Aadhaar-based e-KYC process to include popular small savings schemes, such as the Monthly Income Scheme, Time Deposit, Kisan Vikas Patra, and National Savings Certificate. This follows the nationwide rollout of Aadhaar-based e-KYC for savings accounts from January 6, 2025, for onboarding of new customers (creation of customer information file, or CIF, and opening of single and individual type Post Office Savings Accounts or POSA).

Which additional services are being developed to support biometric-based e-KYC authentication?

Development is underway to extend biometric-based e-KYC for:

Account closure, nomination changes, account transfers

Masked Aadhaar for security

Aadhar numbers will appear in disguised form (xxx-xxx-_) on all account opening forms and other forms obtained from the client for e-KYC-based transactions. The postmaster will make sure that the first eight digits of the Aadhaar number are hidden using a black ink pen or sketch if any document has the unmasked Aadhaar.

As per the order, “All the post offices and CBS-CPCs should ensure that the Aadhaar Number is masked in all the existing documents like AOF, KYG Form etc. containing the Aadhaar Number including the copy of the Aadhaarobtained.”

How opening and managing RD and PPF works using Aadhaar biometric at Post Offices

The Post Master (PA) will obtain the biometric of the depositor for getting the consent to use his/her Aadhaar and proceed for feeding the other details for opening of the account. On completion of all the data entry on the screen, before submission, second biometric of the depositor will be obtained for authenticating the transaction

Pay-in-slip (deposit) or withdrawal vouchers will not be collected for any amount of credit and debit in RD, PPF, RD Loan and PPF Loan accounts while performing transactions through eKYC. While opening the RD and PPF accounts on Aadhaar Authentication basis, the amount written by the depositor in the Account Opening Form will be considered as the amount of initial deposit in RD and PPF accounts.

If the depositor desires to transfer the funds from PO Savings Account for opening of RD accounts, the debit account should be either Single or Joint B type account of the depositor. In case the account is opened on transfer of funds from the post office savings account of the depositor, withdrawal form (SB-7) will not be collected, as the account is opened through biometric authentication of the depositor.
