Isro loses contact with gsat 6a satellite in rare glitch
The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) on Sunday confirmed that it had lost communication with GSAT-6A satellite, three days after its launch, breaking the near impeccable recent record of the space agency.“The second orbit raising operation of GSAT-6A satellite has been successfully carried out by LAM (liquid apogee motor) engine firing for about 53 minutes on March 31 2018 in the morning. After the successful long duration firings, when the satellite was on course to normal operating configuration for the third and final firing, scheduled for April 1 2018, communication from the satellite was lost,” Isro said in a statement.
The news dampened the hitch-free launch of the GSAT-6A by GSLV-F08 on Thursday from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Shriharikota.
This was the first satellite launch under Isro’s new chairman, K.Sivan, who took charge in January.
“Efforts are underway to establish the link with the satellite,” Isro added.
The 2,140-kg GSAT-6A is a high powered S-band communication satellite which would help improve mobile communications to handheld devices, as well as network management techniques that would have been useful in satellite- based mobile communication applications. The technology was aimed at helping the armed forces among other users by improving communications in remote areas. It had a mission life of 10 years.
Thursday’s launch of GSLV-F08 was the 12th flight of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).
