India us sign critical defense agreements to enhance strategic partnership as defence minister visits washington

India and the US signed two key agreements to enhance their strategic partnership as defence minister Rajnath Singh began a four-day visit to Washington. The agreements are the Security of Supplies Arrangement (SOSA) and a Memorandum of Agreement regarding the Assignment of Liaison Officers, aimed at bolstering defense cooperation between the two nations.

The ministry of defence (MoD) made the announcement through a post on X, sharing photographs from the event held on Thursday.

These agreements were signed by Senior defence officials from both sides—Dr Vic Ramdass, principal deputy assistant secretary of defence for Industrial Base Policy representing the US, and Samir Kumar Sinha, additional secretary and director general (Acquisitions) representing India.

The US department of defence (DoD) stated that through the SOSA, both countries have agreed to provide reciprocal priority support for goods and services that promote national defence. This arrangement aims to help both nations acquire critical industrial resources to address unforeseen supply chain disruptions and meet national security needs.

‘This Security of Supply Arrangement represents a pivotal moment in the US-India Major Defence Partner relationship and will be a key factor in strengthening the US-India Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI),’ said Dr Vic Ramdass.

Ramdass added, ‘I look forward to OUSD(A&S) hosting the next DTTI meeting this fall to deepen cooperation between our respective defence industrial bases and pursue bilateral co-development, co-production, and co-sustainment initiatives.’

Through the SOSA, the US and India commit to supporting one another's priority delivery requests for the procurement of critical national defence resources. The US will offer India assurances under the

US Defence Priorities and Allocations System (DPAS), overseen by the DoD and the Department of Commerce (DOC). In return, India will establish a government-industry Code of Conduct, where Indian firms will voluntarily agree to prioritize support for the US.

SOSA's role goes beyond just immediate supply arrangements. It also aims to strengthen interoperability between the US and its defense trade partners. These arrangements help in establishing working groups, communication mechanisms, streamlining processes, and proactive response to potential supply chain issues during peacetime, emergencies, and armed conflict.

India has now joined the list of 18 other SOSA partners of the US. These include Australia, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, and the UK.

During his US visit, Rajnath Singh also addressed the Indian Diaspora. He urged the Indian members to remain committed to their homeland while also demonstrating unwavering dedicat.
