In a move to address the city's chronic traffic issues, the Delhi government has begun work on a detailed plan to alleviate congestion, a key promise made by the BJP ahead of the recent assembly elections.

Senior government officials revealed that Delhi's Chief Secretary, Dharmendra, recently chaired discussions with various agencies to create a workable strategy for easing traffic congestion on major roads. As part of these efforts, a road safety committee has been established to conduct thorough surveys and analyze the city's traffic problems, with input from experts in the field.

A crucial element of this plan will be a pilot decongestion project targeting the busy Dhaula Kuan to Gurgaon border stretch, identified as one of the city's most congested areas. The section is notorious for its multiple choke points, which create significant traffic delays, not only on the direct route but also on several other arterial roads across south, west, and central Delhi.

The move follows a statement from Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari during the election campaign, where he promised that, if the BJP came to power in Delhi, the city would be free of both traffic congestion and air pollution within five years. The BJP's manifesto also pledged to launch a comprehensive plan to address the capital's traffic issues by building new flyovers, tunnel roads, and bypasses, while focusing on 117 major congestion points, including hotspots like Outer Ring Road, MG Road, MB Road, and Ashram Chowk.

In light of recent instructions from the Centre, the Delhi government has initiated collaboration between key stakeholders such as the transport and public works departments, the DDA, the National Highways Authority of India, MCD, NDMC, and traffic police. These agencies will now work together to address the city's traffic challenges.

‘The Dhaula Kuan to Gurgaon border stretch is one of the most congested in the city, with several bottlenecks that disrupt traffic flow and cause cascading delays on other major roads,’ an official said.

The newly formed committee is expected to start its on-the-ground work soon, identifying the main congestion points and the reasons behind traffic jams. Officials anticipate that addressing each choke point may require a combination of solutions, including infrastructure upgrades, bottleneck removal, road repairs, and ensuring compliance from both vehicles and pedestrians.

Additionally, the traffic police have compiled a report on critical congestion points as part of their 100-day action plan to tackle traffic snarls and reduce accidents across the city.

Once the survey and analysis are complete, a comprehensive decongestion plan will be submitted to the government. This plan will outline the specific tasks for each agency involved, setting the stage for long-term improvements in Delhi's traffic management system.
