Disadvantage didi adhikari’s exit hurts tmc prospects for the assembly elections

Although the writing has been on the wall, on Thursday former Bengal minister and estranged Mamata Banerjee aide Suvendu Adhikari quit Trinamool Congress. Now the buzz is that he will join BJP during Amit Shah’s scheduled visit to Midnapore, which is Adhikari’s home turf.

This is the highest profile exit from TMC since Mukul Roy, and as in that case its roots are in Mamata’s promotion of nephew Abhishek Banerjee over party stalwarts who have not only been instrumental in its rise but have also played a key role in holding off the BJP challenge in recent years. Adhikari for example had closely coordinated the Nandigram movement in 2007, and more recently he was instrumental in TMC holding its own in the assembly bypolls following BJP advances in the Lok Sabha elections.

Meanwhile there is also a tug of war going on between the state and the Centre over IPS officers, sparked by the attack on BJP president JP Nadda’s convoy during his travel through South 24 Parganas. So, even as TMC has taken a hit in Adhikari’s exit, there are troubling signs that the intense contestation in the coming assembly elections will manifest in increased violence on the ground, and police forces will be too politicised to counter it effectively. At least on this the Centre and the state should have similar goals and cooperate.
