Countries extend support for india's brics 2026 chairship

Leaders of the BRICS nations have extended full support to India for the Chairship of 18th BRICS Summit 2026 and the holding of the 18th BRICS Summit in India.

In a joint declaration at the 17th BRICS Summit on Sunday, the countries of the BRICS Summit extended support for India's BRICS Chairship for the year 2026. The leaders also welcomed India's candidacy to host the 33rd Conference of the Parties (COP 33) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the year 2028.

The BRICS leader also reiterated India's inclusion to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a permanent member.

Recalling the 2022 Beijing and 2023 Johannesburg-II Leaders’ Declarations, China and Russia, as permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, reiterate their support to the aspirations of Brazil and India to play a greater role in the United Nations, including its Security Council,’ the Rio de Janeiro Declaration stated.

The declaration titled 'Strengthening Global South Cooperation for a More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance' also recognized India's initiative to launch BRICS Startup Knowledge Hub.

We recognize the progress achieved in the implementation of the BRICS Action Plan for Innovation 2021-2024, which included the launching of the BRICS Startup Forum in January 2025, under the leadership of India, and appreciate the launch of its BRICS Startup Knowledge Hub, to foster collaboration and deeper engagement among the startup ecosystems of the BRICS countries, as stated in the BRICS declaration.

BRICS appreciated the efforts made by India for organizing the Capacity Building Sessions on Digital Transformation in BRICS as a side-event and encourage BRICS members to continue promoting side events. The countries saluted India's step to strengthen the voice of the African Union during its presidency of G20 in 2023.

Under climate change initiatives, the BRICS declaration stated, ‘While appreciating the efforts of our countries to preserve rare species and noting the high vulnerability of big cats, we take note of the Republic of India’s initiative to create an international Big Cats Alliance and encourage BRICS countries to work together to the conservation of big cats.’

This year, BRICS added Indonesia as a new member to the organization. Also, Republic of Belarus, the Plurinational State of Bolivia, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Republic of Cuba, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Malaysia, the Kingdom of Thailand, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Republic of Uganda, and the Republic of Uzbekistan were added as BRICS partner countries.
