Bjp the gainer as nitish kumar recalibrates

Ambition should be made of sterner stuff, said Mark Antony to the crowd after describing how Caesar had wept when the poor cried. Of course, he only served to underline how, in politics, lachrymose, public sensitivity is very much a tool of ambition. Nitish Kumar’s inability to cohabit with ally Tejashwi Yadav, after the CBI filed a first information report against him over corruption, fits into the same show of ambition.
The biggest gainer from Kumar’s resignation is the BJP, which has made no secret of its desire to lure Nitish out of the anti-BJP grand alliance. On Wednesday evening, barring an unlikely turn of events, the alliance appeared dead with Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly applauding Kumar for taking a stand against corruption. It appears almost certain that Kumar would form a new government with BJP support, either from outside or as part of a revived Janata Dal (United)-BJP alliance.
Such a turn of events could certainly engender cynicism among the public, who had given the JD(U)-Rashtriya Janata Dal-Congress combine, and its explicitly anti-BJP platform, a massive mandate in the 2015 assembly elections. On the other hand, better alignment with the Centre will help the cause of governance in one of India’s poorest states. It also marks a huge blow for the prospects for that mythical entity: a combined opposition. The fact of the matter is that the Nitish-Lalu model of cohabitation was becoming increasingly untenable. The ostensible reason for the break-up may be corruption and Kumar’s wish to position himself as a man who not only fights it, but keeps his distance from it. After all, having a deputy chief minister with a corruption case against him doesn’t look good from any angle, moral or political.
In all this, Kumar has demonstrated that he is one of India’s most ruthless — and flexible — politicians. We would urge Kumar to show similar flexibility and scrap, or at the very least partially reverse, his prohibition policy, which can only be enforced by using the coercive power of the state and a concomitant violation of civil liberties.
