Anti brexit glory is for lib dems' to lose
There is a tide in the affairs of political parties, which, taken at the flood, lead on to power and glory. The tricky part is recognising the tide for what it is, at least when it begins to rise above your nose. A foreign example might serve to illustrate the point for the benefit of domestic observers. The Liberal Democrats in the United Kingdom, for example, have a golden chance to take the centre stage, by stoutly championing the case against Brexit in the snap general elections that have been called by Prime Minister Theresa May. They should take note of the sizeable number of British voters who are expressing buyer's remorse about Brexit. The June election could well be their comeback vehicle, after having been decimated in the last general elections. Instead of hedging bets, flirting with a soft Brexit or a second referendum, Tim Farron's party should come out in favour of remaining in the European Union. A clear stance would yield dividends in Scot land, where Brexit would pave the way for a second referendum on leaving the UK and all those who voted in the first referendum against secession would almost automatically plump for a party that votes against the material change in circumstance, namely, Brexit, that Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon cites as the trigger for a second referendum. The Liberal Democrats' opposition to a “hard Brexit” secured spectacular wins in council elections since the referendum. A weakened Labour Party provides the perfect stage for the Lib Dems to use the general elections to override the Brexit referendum's narrow majority for leaving the European Union. The Liberal Democrats have described May's anti-immigration stance as a stumbling block for a trade deal with India. A Lib Dem resurgence would be a boon for India as well.
